Blog: Jumping to Conclusions

Jumping to Conclusions

So I was reading through my RSS feed this morning, as per usual, and I happened across an article about a concerning statement from the newly-elected president of Argentina, Javier Milei. In a nutshell, he wants the Falklands back.

I immediately posted the article on everything from Bluesky to Station, with the caption, "Who had Falklands War II on their apocalypse bingo card?", except I forgot to read it first.

As it turns out, Milei is not planning to take back the Falklands by force (as of 12:03 on 22nd Nov '23), but by "diplomatic means". As such, I then deleted all of the posts (except for the one in !worldnews@lemmy.ml).

The problem here is that I jumped to the false conclusion of "we're at war, bitches!", when I should have at least looked at the article first. However, it's not entirely my fault. Newspapers have been sensationalist since the in the 1800s, but it's often done so casually that you don't notice.

Also, I am constantly playing mental apocalypse bingo. So far, my bingo card has seven of the twenty boxes filled.

Anyway, in short, let's all actually read our news before making decisions about who killed who, and who is or isn't going to blow up the world.
